1936-1945
- The first monthly meeting was held on Sunday 26th January 1936 in the office of H.M. Mehtha & Co. and approved the rules and regulations. First Extra-ordinary General Meeting was held on 02-02-1936 and the first half yearly General meeting was held on 12-07-1936. Savings Bank account was opened in Travancore Bank in March. Angara Shettigar, a senior sepoy working for a Cargo ship between Mumbai – Mangalore was the first person to donate a handsome amount. On 7th January 1937 first Annual General Meeting was held. In the agm a decision was taken to reimburse the funeral expenditure to the bereaved family.
- The first educational scholarship of Rs 50/- was awarded to Derebail Sesappa Shettigar in 1938. In 1940 Shree Durga Parameshwari Yakshagana Sabha was established by the members of the Sangha. Programmes were conducted which were well appreciated by the community members and this has continued for over 60 years since then.
- On 12-01-1941, the General Body prepared and accepted the symbol for the Sangha. It consists of Charaka, Lotus and a thread connecting Lotus & Charaka with Saffron background.
- A scholarship was sanctioned in 1942 to Dayanand Konchady who was pursuing engineering in Madras (Chennai). He was the first engineer of our Samaj.
- “Quit India Movement” was at its highest peak. Many of our people participated in this movement in 1942. First World War continued during this time. Those who did not have a place to live and did not have employment engaged a big room at Khar for temporary use. The room was handed over to the owner soon after the First World War.
- In 1944, the Sangha was renamed as “Padmashali Samaja Seva Sangha”. Padmashali Death Fund was established. The membership crossed 100 in 1945.
- During this decade the Sangha tried to unite Padmashalis, to eradicate social impediments and attracted youngsters for their education. Apart from the Founder Members, Krishnappa Shettigar, Lakshminaraya Shettigar, Govinda Shettigar contributed a lot for the progress of the Sangha.
1946-1955
- During 1946 & 1947 many of our people participated in India’s struggle for independence. Dayanand Konchady was felicitated in 1946 just before proceeding to America for higher education. In 1947, Vyasaraya Shettigar was awarded scholarship for pursuing education in Medicine. He became the first Doctor of our Samaj.
- Padmashali Students' Society was established in 1949 and continued its existence till 1954 with a commendable service to the Padmashalis.
- In 1950, three classes of membership came into existence viz-a-viz Class A, Class B and Class C.
- A motion picture by name “Chandralekha” was screened at Central Theatre for the purpose of increasing fund of the Sangha on 09-07-1950.
- Smt. Satyavathi Narayana Padmashali was the first lady member to speak on the progress of Ladies at the Annual General Meeting on 26-01-1953.
- On 27-02-1953, the Sangha was registered under Public Trusts Act. A decision was taken to extend a helping hand to the students who wanted to continue their education in Mumbai in 1955. In the same year “Ratna Deepa” motion picture was exhibited at Roxy theatre in Mumbai. During 1948 to 1955 membership dues were collected vigorously under the leadership of S. M. Padmanabha.
- During the decade Janardhana B. Shettigar, Vannaya N. Shettigar, Narayana B. Padmashali contributed a lot for the onward progress of the Sangha.
1956-1965
- New rules and regulations were approved in the year 1956.
- On 25-12-1960 “Nishan” Motion picture was exhibited at Roxy theatre as part of fund raising programme.
- Silver Jubilee celebration: Silver Jubilee Committee was formed under the President ship of A.B.Shettigar in 1961 “Padmashali Guards” came into existence during this time. (click here to see photos). To commemorate the development and progress of the Sangha, Silver Jubilee was celebrated on 31-01-1962 at Cowasji Jehangir Hall. Smt. Shera N Vajifdar, a well known Social Worker was the chief guest & Advocate M.D.Shetty of Mumbai High Court was the President of the Silver Jubilee Function. (click here to see the photo of souvenir)
- In 1963, Half-yearly AGM was withdrawn. During 1956 to 1965, Sanjiv T Shettigar, K.K.Shettigar, B.Y Padmashali, Vaman G Shettigar, Babu V Shettigar, T Ramayya Shettigar worked for the overall upliftment of the Sangha.
1966-1975
- During 1966-1972 Sangha’s activities were slowed down and complete stoppage was seen during 1967 to 1972. At the end of 1972, some of the enthusiastic members of the Dakshina Kannada Jilla Padmasabha discussed the issues with ex-workers of the Sangha. As a result, in 1973, the activities of the Sangha got restarted with a new vigor. On 07-01-1973 an Extra-ordinary General Body Meeting was held under the President ship of D. Rajeeva N Shettigar and new committee was elected.
- The Sangha participated in the Silver Jubilee celebration of Dakshina Kannada Jilla Padmasabha in 1973. During the celebration, we found out that Shree Adi Shankaracharya is our Kulaguru and there were enough proof in the books available at Sringeri Math. 16 point formulae were adopted at this celebration. Since then we started remitting the gurukanika to the holy feet of Jagadguru Shree Adi Shankaracharya at Sringeri math.
- A scheme of awarding prizes to the meritorious students were started from the year 1974 AGM onwards and still is being continued.
- One of the founder member Krishna Pundu Shettigar left for heavenly abode in 1974.
- Keeping in view of expanding and promoting the educational activities, “Padmashali Education Fund” was started on 22-12-1974 under Padmashali Samaja Seva Sangha with the guidance of D.Rajeeva N Shettigar. The following 12 members thus became the founder members of the Padmashali Education fund (names of the membes...).
- In 1975, the Managing Committee members were increased to 16. All the members participated in the marriage ceremony and other family functions as guides.
- On 26-01-1975, the Annual General Meeting of the Sangha, approved the formation of “The Padmashali Education Fund”. In order to increase the fund, a dance ballet “Santa Sakhu” was held on 02-03-1975 at Shanmukhananda hall by the team of Shri Yogendra Desai. An amount of Rs 75,000/- was collected through this programme. Padmashali Education Fund was subsequently renamed as Padmashali Education Society on 02-03-1975. On 15-08-1975, a new office room was inaugurated at G-16, Jumbo Darshan Society at Andheri East, Mumbai. The first dream came into reality. It can accomodate around 12 students who donot have any other arrangements to stay in Mumbai.
1976-1985
- The founder members K.C.Shettigar with his wife and A.B.Shettigar were felicitated by the ex-Mayor Mr.Boman Behram on 25-01-1976 at the AGM. Since then the new committee started working with OATH taking ceremony. On 06-02-1976, The Padmashali Education Society was registered under Bombay Public Trusts Act 1950 and Society Act. The office room at Andheri was transferred to The Padmashali Education Society.
- The Sangha expelled two of its members for falsely accusing the Sangha, after the judgment order from the Charity Commissioner in favor of Sangha on 26-01-1977. On 26-06-1977, some of the rules and regulations of the Sangha were amended and The Padmashali Education Society got 80G exemption certificate from Income Tax department.Akash Ganga dance drama was held at Birla Mathushri Sabhagriha on 12-03-1978 by the troupe of Shri Yogendra Desai for raising funds for Educational Scholarship and collected around Rs 1,25,000/-.
- The Sangha felicitated Shri Konda Laxman Bapuji, ex-Minister of Andhra Pradesh and a powerful leader in the Padmashali Community. Vijaya Vahini, a Yakshagana Bayalata was performed at Shanmukhananda Hall on 06-09-1980 for raising funds towards Ladies Scholarship Fund. Nearly Rs.20,500/- was collected by this programme.
- Our Sangha participated in the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Karnataka Padmashali Sangha at Bangalore in December 1980 and 11th Akhila Bharatha Padmashali Mahasabha.
- Project-Samaja Mandira:
- Extra-ordinary general meeting of the Sangha and Society was held on 15-08-1981 to approve the long term programme to build Samaja Mandira. A committee consisting 34 members under the president ship of D Rajeeva N Shettigar was formed.
- On 25-09-1981 another founder member K.C.Shettigar left for heavenly abode.
- On 26-01-1982 at the Annual General Meeting, photos of late Krishna P. Shettigar and K. C. Shettigar were unveiled.
- Arrival of Jagadguru Shankaracharya:
- Year 1982 was a very special year for the Padmashalis of Sangha and Society. Parama Poojya Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Shri Shri Abhinav Vidya Theertha Mahasannidhanam along with his Successor Shri Bharathi Theertha Sannidhanam came to Mumbai. On 04-04-1982 the Sangha and the Society along with members and families specially offered Pada Pooja, Gurudakshina Samarpana and Sahasranama Seva at Gokul Hall, Sion, Mumbai
- The Sangha felicitated Janardhan Poojary, central deputy finance minister on 18-04-1982 at Mumbai. On 20-08-1982 Mr.Sanjiva T. Shettigar, one of the senior most members and ex-president expired.
- On 10-10-1982, as a part of Golden Jubilee celebration, preliminary function was inaugurated by Loksabha Member Rajesh Pilot at Damodar Thakersey Hall, Parel, Mumbai. Deputy Minister for city development Leeladhar Vyas was the Chief Guest.
- On 20-05-1983, Mr.K. Brahmanand and his wife were felicitated for their selfless service to the Padmashali Community.
- During this decade D Rajeeva N Shettigar, Babu V Shettigar, Srinivas S Shettigar, Y.Chandrashekhar G Shettigar, U.A.Laxman, T Shrinivas Shettigar, K.Devaraya Padmashali,Krishna C Shettigar, Vasu L Shettigar, offered their services to promote and build the Sangha and Society to a stable condition.
- Youngsters taking over the mantle:
- In this decade well educated, hardworking, dedicated youngsters came forward to shoulder the responsibility of continuing the work of the Sangha and Society.
- Balakrishna M Shettigar, Vishwanath B. Govardhan R.S, Chennaraya J Shettigar, Dayananda D Shettigar,, K.K.Padmashali, Bhujanga R Shettigar,, Jayanth C Shettigar, Jagannath T Shettigar, Devdas K Shettigar, Madhusudhan S Shettigar, Omprakash D Shettigar, Janardhan C Shettigar were the leaders. Balakrishna R Shettigar and Sunder G Shettigar support the work of internal audit.
1986-1987
- On 09-08-1986, Mumbai Kannadigas and other Kannada organizations organized a felicitation function to the ex- Home Minister & Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The Sangha and Society participated in this function.
- By mid-1987 most of the members of the Sangha promised a total amount of Rs 4,00,000/- towards Samaja Mandira project. During this year life membership crossed 1200.
- Golden Jubilee year 1936-1987:
- On 23-08-1987 the Sangha celebrated Golden Jubilee Function in aid of building fund of The Padmashali Education Society at Shanmukhananda Hall, King circle. Producer-Director Yogendra Desai with his Nirman & Bhoomika Arts presented a Dance Ballet in Hindi “Parivarthan” which was applauded by the guests and members. Shri Arun Govil, a well known TV artiste who played the character of Sri Rama in the famous Ramayana serial graced the occasion as a Chief Guest. Souvenir by name “Suvarna Padma” golden jubilee 1936-1986 was released. On the same day at 3.00pm, a Conference and Felicitations function was held. Dr. A.R.Acharya, Industrialist and Social Worker was the Chief Guest. Shri Konda Laxman Bapuji, ex-minister of Andhra Pradesh was the Chairman of this function.
- K Brahmanand Mangalore, Mudradi Keshav Shettigar, Mukhyaprana Kinnigoli, Lingappa B Shettigar, Babu V Shettigar, D Rajeeva N Shettigar, Srinivas S Shettigar, Narayana A Padmashali, Gopal L Padmashali, Jeevi Shettigar were felicitated at this function for their outstanding service in the field of Social service, Yakshagana, Arts and Painting Journalism and Linguist.
