Padmashali Mahasabha to highlight problems of weaver community
- Plea to add Handloom Reservation Act in IX schedule
- Rs. 1 lakh ex gratia to kin on suicide, starvation death victims
- Setting up of yarn banks; loans and subsidy sought
GUNTUR: The Andhra Pradesh Weavers Association is organising a `Padmashali Mahasabha' on July 24 at Guntur, to highlight the problems of the weaving community and to sensitise them on their rights, the association president, Udatha Peddanna, has said.
Speaking at a function organised by the association here on Sunday, he said there would be a national and State-level conference in the morning followed by a public meeting in the afternoon at the Venkateshwara Gnana Mandiram in Guntur.
Old-age pension
The Government was considering giving old-age pensions to 50,000 aged handloom weavers and workers across the State and credit cards for handloom workers to support them in their profession, the Mangalagiri MLA, Meerugudi Hanumantha Rao, said.
He said the Government was awaiting the report of the committee set up to look into the problems of weavers.
The issue of providing identity cards to eligible weavers was also under consideration of the Government, he added. He also released a wall poster in connection with the mahasabha on the occasion.
The association sought incorporation of Handloom Reservation Act, 1985 in the IX schedule of the Constitution, payment of Rs. 1 lakh ex gratia to the kin of suicide and starvation death victims and setting up of yarn banks to help in its price regulation.
The association wanted the Centre to release funds to the handloom bank.
Granting loans to weavers at four per cent interest, a subsidy of 20 per cent on yarn and a committee to regularise the prices of yank yarn in the market was also sought.
11 percent of population
The Andhra Pradesh Padmashali Co-coordinating Committee convener, Yangala Koteshwara Rao, said the Padmashali community comprised of 11 per cent of the population but their representation in various sectors was negligible.
The association wanted representation in the legislature in proportion to their population.
